Student Journey at TWT

Everyone achieves. Everyone succeeds.

At TWT, we are committed to supporting every student’s unique journey through school. From the moment your child steps through our doors, they will experience a welcoming environment focused on helping them grow, explore their interests, and achieve their goals. Here’s what to expect on their journey at TWT.

Referral and Trial Days: Discover TWT

Starting a new school can be a big step, so we invite you and your child to get to know each other before deciding if we are the best place for them. During our referral and trial days, they will have the chance to explore our school, meet teachers, connect with future classmates, and experience TWT’s supportive environment. These days give your child a feel for what school life is like here, so they can start their journey with confidence and excitement.

Mentoring: Personalised Support from Day One

From their first day, they will be paired with a mentor who will be there to guide them through every step of their journey. A mentor is their personal supporter and positive role model, ready to listen, offer advice, and work with them to achieve their goals. Together, they will discuss interests, set personal goals, talk through any challenges, and outline steps to overcome them. All of this is recorded in a Personal Development Plan tailored to every student. At the end of the year, they will have a completed record of their journey—progress, achievements, and all the ways they have grown. This personal book reflects how far they have come and is a source of pride and motivation for their next steps at TWT and beyond.

Ongoing support

Every two weeks, your child will have a dedicated session with their mentor. In these sessions, they will not only track their goals but also assess and develop their basic need (love and belonging, freedom, self worth and power, fun and enjoyment, survival)and 8 personal and social skills (positive behaviour, time management, critical thinking, effort, communication, leadership, negotiation, team work). Every term, they will review these areas together, recognising the progress and setting new goals for improvement.

Work experience and next steps

Starting from year 9, mentors will support your child in exploring different careers options and applying for work placements that match your goals. Together, they will plan your child’s steps towards the future considering what career paths might be best fit for them. Even after they leave, our commitment doesn’t end there. For the first six months after graduation their mentor will stay in touch to ensure they are settling in well. This ongoing support is here to make sure their transition smoothly into their next chapter, whether that’s job, further education, or another exciting step forward.

Everyday School life

Therapeutic approach

Based on their needs and EHCPs, your child can benefit from a range of therapies including Speech and Language, Art, Music and Movement.

Qualified therapists come weekly to the school. They have a first assessment session where they get to know each other and develop goals and plans for progress. The therapists work closely with teachers to ensure that all strategies and needs identified during sessions are being met in lessons. Having therapies at school reduces stress and anxiety for the students, as they feel safe, and for the parents, as they know their child is receiving the support they need. Not only – we have a fully equipped sensory room to help with emotional and sensory regulation.

School life and clubs

Through practical sessions, your child learns essential skills like budgeting, cooking, and other daily tasks that empower them to fulfil their needs.

Learning goes beyond the classroom. Our programme emphasises valuable life skills that promote independence. Through practical sessions, your child learns essential skills like budgeting, cooking, and other daily tasks that empower them to fulfil their needs both now and after they leave school. By graduation, your child will be equipped with both the qualifications and life skills to succeed confidently. They will also have the opportunities to take part in a number of Sport and Recreation opportunities that will help develop gross motor skills and social activities to develop communications and friendships.

During breaks, your child will also have the chance to unwind and enjoy themselves through a range of clubs designed to support your well-being and interests. Whether it’s starting the day at the morning breakfast club, expressing themselves in art and mindfulness, diving into technology at the computer club, or just having a moment to laugh and relax with friends, there’s something for everyone.
