How we use Choice Theory

At The Write Time School, we apply Dr. William Glasser’s Choice Theory to guide our teaching and behaviour. The Choice Theory approach teaches that all behaviour is driven by five basic human needs:

Survival

Freedom

Love & Belonging

Fun

Power

By focusing on these needs, we ensure that students feel in control of their education and well-being, setting them up for long-term success both in and out of school.

What is Choice Theory?

self control

We believe students can only control their own actions and thoughts. Learning they cannot control others, has a positive impact on their feelings, behaviour and overall well-being. Through personalised learning pathways, we help them meet their needs in a supportive environment.

Total behaviour

We realise that all behaviour has a positive intent for the individual. Students express behaviour through actions, thoughts, feelings, and physical responses. At The Write Time, we emphasise the power of choosing thoughts and actions, fostering self-control and responsibility.

Our approach

We encourage the use of Caring Habits—Supporting, Encouraging, Listening, and Respecting—and discourage Deadly Habits like Criticising or Blaming. This approach helps students build healthy relationships and develop emotionally.

Quality World

Each student’s “Quality World” includes the people, experiences, and values that matter most to them. We work with students to align their choices with what’s important to them, fostering personal growth and success.

“The Write Time provides students with the opportunity to improve their life chances and have a positive future.”

Choice Theory in practice

We collaborate with parents, partner schools, and professionals to enhance academic progress and pastoral care, ensuring holistic support for our students. Through small groups and one-on-one assistance from an Outreach Development Worker, we support students to feel empowered to reach their potential within an inclusive environment.

Recognising that many students come to us after negative experiences, we tailor our programme to meet individual needs and aspirations. Our staff are experienced in supporting various additional needs and receive ongoing training to provide the best learning experience possible.

How we Develop Personal Social Skills

The Write Time School employs full-time Outreach Development Tutors (ODTs) to support students’ positive behaviour and personal growth. Each student is assigned an ODT and follows a Personal Development Plan, setting goals based on 8 key skills, including Positive behaviour, time management, critical thinking, effort, teamwork, leadership, negotiation and communication.

ODTs also organise activities like sports and outdoor challenges, helping students build coping strategies and stretch their comfort zones. Additionally, they provide non-academic sessions covering topics such as healthy eating, safety, and career preparation, ensuring students develop holistically.

“Senior management spend considerable time involving and engaging the team in the organisations vision and objectives.”
